Spark plugs ignite the air-fuel mixture in gasoline engines. Worn or fouled plugs can contribute to misfires, but coils, fuel delivery, and mechanical faults can cause similar symptoms. OOROO checks scheduled replacement needs and investigates running problems before recommending ignition repairs.

Plan spark plug replacement correctly

Plug design and engine requirements determine the replacement interval. Rough idle, hesitation, or a misfire may require diagnosis before that interval. A flashing check-engine light with rough running calls for stopping safely, because continued misfiring can damage the catalytic converter.

How often do spark plugs need replacement?
Follow the interval for your exact engine and specified plug type. Conventional and long-life plugs do not share one schedule. Unknown maintenance history or misfire symptoms may justify an inspection, but mileage alone does not identify the cause of poor running.
Are iridium spark plugs always an upgrade?
Not automatically. The correct heat range, dimensions, electrode design, and specification matter more than a premium label. Use the plug type approved for the engine; changing materials alone does not guarantee better fuel economy or performance.
Should ignition coils be replaced with the plugs?
Not simply because the plugs are due. Coils, boots, and wires should be checked for damage and faults, then replaced when findings support it. A misfire can have several causes, so replacing every ignition component without testing may not solve the problem.
Why do spark plug gap and tightening torque matter?
The specified gap supports proper ignition, while correct torque helps the plug seal and transfer heat without damaging threads. Follow the vehicle and plug manufacturer’s instructions; some fine-wire plugs have limits on gap adjustment.
Will new spark plugs fix a rough idle?
They may help if worn or fouled plugs are the cause. Air leaks, fuel-system faults, coils, compression problems, or other issues can also cause rough idle. Diagnosis helps determine whether plug replacement is maintenance, the repair, or only part of the work needed.
