Being Productive at Work

September 6, 2018

You’re at the office. You have a ton of work to do. You tell yourself that today is going to be different—today is going to be the day where you get all of your work done in a timely manner and don’t feel rushed and stressed all day long. And then…

We all want to be productive, but sometimes it can be difficult to keep or even find the motivation needed to give 100% at the office. Luckily, there are a few simple ways you can boost your productivity, so you’ll feel less like that guy and more like this guy:

Make a To-Do List

It might sound simple (and that’s because it is!), but making a to-do list can help you stay organized throughout the day, making it much easier to be productive. Whether you prefer to use paper and pen or take notes on your phone or tablet, start each day by creating a list of all the responsibilities you have for the day. You can either start with the easiest items so that you have more time for larger projects, or get those larger projects out of the way first so you can focus on the simple stuff for the rest of the day.

Give Yourself Pep Talks

It’s easy to think and speak negatively about yourself when you feel like you’re not doing your best at work. But it’s also important to be your own cheerleader so you can feel better and boost your productivity. Giving yourself pep talks can help you accomplish this goal. Studies show that talking to yourself the way you would talk to a friend or colleague can help you lessen the effects of anxiety and feel more positive. It might feel weird at first, but give it a shot the next time you’re feeling down at the office!

Take Breaks

What’s that they say about all work and no play? It might sound counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to stay productive is to stop working—at least for a little bit! Don’t try to spend the entire day sitting in front of your computer screen doing work. This can become overwhelming and make you feel burned out after a while. Try to work for 45 minutes or an hour, then take a 5-to-10-minute break. Short breaks throughout the day help you recollect your thoughts and get back into the zone.
