Why Is My Car A/C Blowing Hot Air?

The Customer Concern: A/C That Worked Sometimes, Then Suddenly Blew Hot Air

A new customer came to OOROO with a frustrating air conditioning concern:

“My A/C periodically won’t cool and only blows hot air. When it works, it is cold.”

That kind of symptom can be confusing. If the A/C is cold sometimes, many drivers assume the refrigerant level is fine or that the system is “mostly working.” But intermittent A/C problems can come from several different areas, including electrical controls, sensors, HVAC doors, actuators, refrigerant issues, or internal dash components.

In this case, the customer’s A/C did not simply stop working. It would cool properly at times, then suddenly blow hot air through the vents.

That detail mattered.

Diagnosing the A/C Problem: Listening for the Clue Behind the Dash

During the initial inspection, our technician tested the temperature controls by switching the system from cool to hot. While doing that, a clicking sound was heard from the passenger side HVAC actuator area. There was also a slight click from the driver side.

When the vehicle was rechecked, the driver side actuator was clicking more noticeably, with a slight click from the passenger side.

That clicking sound was the big clue.

When you hear clicking behind the dashboard while adjusting the temperature, it often points toward a problem with an HVAC actuator. These small electric motors move internal air doors inside the heating and air conditioning system. Those doors help direct air through the vents and determine whether you get warm air, cold air, or a blend of both.

What Is a Blend Door Actuator?

A blend door actuator is a small motorized part inside your vehicle’s HVAC system. Its job is to move the blend doors that control airflow and temperature.

When everything works correctly, the actuator responds when you turn the temperature dial or press a climate control button. It moves the door to send air across the heater core, the evaporator, or a blend of both.

When a blend door actuator fails, you may notice symptoms like:

In this customer’s vehicle, both the driver side and passenger side blend door actuators were found to be broken and stripped.

The Cause: Broken and Stripped HVAC Blend Door Actuators

After further inspection, our technician confirmed that both blend door actuators were damaged. The actuator gears were broken and stripped, which meant the HVAC doors could no longer stay properly controlled.

Because the blend doors were loose, they could swing open unexpectedly when the vehicle accelerated, braked hard, or hit a bump in the road.

That explained the customer’s exact complaint.

The A/C could be cold one moment, then suddenly blast hot air the next. The issue was not simply that the A/C system could not cool. The problem was that the airflow doors inside the HVAC system were moving when they should not have been.

The Recommended Repair: Replace Both Blend Door Actuators

To fix the issue properly, our technician recommended replacing both the driver side and passenger side HVAC blend door actuators.

This repair restored control of the airflow doors inside the HVAC system. Once the faulty actuators were replaced, the system could direct air where it belonged again, allowing the A/C to provide cold air consistently instead of randomly switching to hot air.

Completed Work: A/C Diagnosis, Actuator Replacement, and Oil Change

For this customer, the approved repair included:

By replacing the failed actuators, the HVAC system was able to regain proper airflow control. The customer’s primary A/C concern was diagnosed and repaired.

Additional Inspection Findings

During the vehicle inspection, our technician also documented several items for future attention. These were not part of the primary A/C concern, but they were important to note so the customer could plan ahead.

The inspection found:

These findings were documented so the customer had a clear picture of the vehicle’s overall condition.

Why a Proper A/C Diagnosis Matters

When your car A/C blows hot air, it is easy to assume the system just needs refrigerant. But that is not always the case.

A/C problems can come from many different sources, including:

That is why a proper diagnostic process matters. In this case, the A/C could still blow cold air, which meant the issue was not as simple as “no cooling.” The real problem was inside the airflow control system.

Without a thorough inspection, the failed blend door actuators could have been missed.

Common Signs Your Car May Need a Blend Door Actuator Replacement

You may need a blend door actuator diagnosis if you notice:

If your vehicle has any of these symptoms, it is worth having the HVAC system inspected before replacing parts blindly.

OOROO’s Approach: Diagnose, Explain, Repair

At OOROO, we do not like guessing games, especially when your dashboard starts playing percussion and your A/C turns into a desert flute.

For this customer, the process was clear:

  1. Listen to the customer’s concern
  2. Test the HVAC system
  3. Identify the clicking actuator noise
  4. Confirm both blend door actuators were failed
  5. Explain why hot air was blasting through the vents
  6. Replace the faulty components
  7. Complete the oil change
  8. Document additional maintenance items for future attention

The result: the A/C concern was diagnosed, the repair was completed, and the customer had a better understanding of what was happening inside the vehicle.

Is Your Car A/C Blowing Hot Air?

If your car A/C is blowing hot air, only cooling sometimes, or making a clicking noise behind the dash, the issue may be more than a simple recharge.

It could be a blend door actuator problem, an airflow control issue, or another HVAC system fault that needs proper testing.

Schedule an A/C diagnostic with OOROO and let our team track down the real problem, explain what we find, and help you get comfortable again.

12 Year OOROO-versary

Thank You

As we celebrate our 12-year OOROO-versary, it’s worth taking a quick glance back through the rearview mirror of the last year! We’re reminded of the many moments, milestones, and meaningful events that shaped our journey as well as those who helped us along the way. It was a year filled with progress, connection, and pride, and we’re grateful for the opportunities we had to serve, grow, and be part of our community in our 12th year.

Message from Jeff Wright, Former Owner of Priority Auto

9th Annual Joyride Recipients

What are the holidays for, if not for giving? We have officially wrapped up our 9th Annual Joyride program, and for all of us at OOROO, it’s been a true JOY!

Our team was blown away by the record number of nominations we received this year from friends and neighbors in our community. The heartfelt entries for those in need made selecting recipients a tough but incredibly meaningful decision for our local panel of judges in Tucson and Phoenix.

If you’re not familiar with our Joyride program, each holiday season OOROO has the honor of gifting complimentary auto repair to families in need. This year, we were able to help two deserving recipients.

Our first recipient, Ben, is a hardworking single father and social worker who gives his all to his clients each day, helping them find shelter, resources, and mental health counseling. When he isn’t working, he’s making sure his family has everything they need while finding small ways to bring joy to everyone around him. Through Joyride, we were able to address multiple repairs on his vehicle, including his check engine light, power steering leaks, brakes, suspension, air conditioning, oil leaks, a tune-up, battery replacement, and cooling system repairs.

After the work was complete, Ben shared:

“I feel like I have a new car. It’s nice to know my vehicle is safe. I feel good about running my daughter places now. My car is actually superb. Everyone was very nice and helpful. They went above and beyond what I thought they would do.”

Our second recipient (who preferred that his name not be shared) was nominated by a family member who has watched him provide for his family of seven while also battling cancer. Despite his own health challenges, he remains passionate about serving his community through his work and time spent with his family. His nominator shared that “he has learned to become a jack of all trades to cut down on costs and make ends meet.” We were able to complete extensive repairs, including replacing the exhaust manifold, front suspension lower control arm, cooling fan, rear suspension stabilizer bar, starter, and lower radiator hose, along with new spark plugs, wiper blades, an oil change, brake fluid flush, and tire mounting & balancing.

It is truly an honor for OOROO to show up for our neighbors in need—especially recipients like these, who give so much of themselves every day. We hope the work we’ve done not only provides safety but also brings peace of mind.

Joyride would not be possible without the support of our local volunteer panel of judges and our incredible vendor partners. Please join us in thanking the judges who volunteered their time to review more than 110 submissions and help select these two deserving families. We also extend our deepest thanks to our partners at Parts Authority, Napa, AutoZone, Desert Financial Credit Union of Phoenix, and Worldpac, along with TreadLogic, who replaced two tire pressure sensors at no charge and donated four tires for our Phoenix recipient this year. We are incredible grateful for all the hard work and care our OOROO teams in Queen Creek and Oro Valley put into helping these families.

May this be a year of blessings, health, happiness, and yes, JOY for all!

OOROO Wetmore Grand Opening

Thank you!

On behalf of our OOROO Team, thank you for all of the love and support from our community on Friday, September 5th as we kicked off our Grand Opening for OOROO Wetmore. We are blown away by the turnout from friends, neighbors, partners, vendors, family, local chambers and our surrounding community. We couldn’t do what we do without you!

We hope to see you soon in keeping you safe and caring for your car!

8th Annual Joyride Recipients

Happy Holidays from all of us at OOROO! We were blessed to be able to help two families in our community this year through our Annual Joyride program.

Every holiday season, OOROO has the honor of offering the gift of complimentary auto repair to families in need through our Joyride Program. We of course could not do what we do without the thoughtful nominations submitted by all of you in our Tucson and Phoenix communities. In fact, we have just wrapped up our 8th year of Joyride and are blown away to see how much it has grown.

At OOROO, we care about more than just keeping your vehicle safe and running smoothly, we care about YOU! We care about the safety of each of our customers that we have the privilege of helping and we are honored to help our community by giving back where we can. The gratitude and kind words our recipients shared this year are part of what makes this program so special to our team.

We would be remiss if we didn’t also take the time to acknowledge that Joyride would not be possible without the support of our local volunteer panel of judges. Thank you to the 5 judges who volunteered their time to go through your submissions and help select these two deserving individuals and their families. We also want to express our gratitude to everyone who continues to nominate and share the stories of friends in need in our community for Joyride each year!

Happy New Year! Stay safe on the road!

OOROO Auto Named to Inc. 5000 List of America’s Fastest-Growing Companies

OOROO Auto, a multi-award-winning auto repair and maintenance service provider in Southern Arizona, announced today it has been named among Inc. Magazine’s prestigious Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing private companies in America for the second time.

Ranking at 3283, OOROO’s place on the list rose 313 spots, elevating its presence on an impressive list of well-known names that first came to national prominence as honorees on the Inc. 5000: Microsoft, Meta, Chobani, Under Armour, Timberland, Oracle, Patagonia, and many other household-name brands. OOROO was also named number 65 among Consumer Services companies on the list and the 98th fastest growing company in Arizona.

“This award highlights the amazing growth OOROO has experienced over the past few years and is a testament to our team’s efforts in providing exceptional service with honesty and heart,” said OOROO Founder and CEO Jeff Artzi. “We’ve worked hard to create positive experiences through our customer-centric car care programs, like our Happy Car Club and OOROOblueSM Rewards program, and I believe our growth is a reflection of our success achieving that.”

“It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come in ten years, and we’re just getting started,” Lindsey Wiederstein, OOROO Co-Founder added. “Our business model is simple, but it works, and our customers tell us every day how much they appreciate the experience when they visit one of our shops or when we provide services to them at their work or home—giving them back time in their day and week.

Among its most successful innovations, OOROO’s “Happy Car Club” provides its customers with a suite of auto care services, including oil changes, inspections, maintenance services, towing, and a discount on all other auto repairs, for one low monthly fee. The Happy Car Club has helped the company expand its award-winning mobile repair services, which bring automotive services to customers at their home or work at no added cost.

“Our culture is very different than what you’d find at other auto shops—and customers notice and are very vocal about that difference. Our customer reviews, community awards, and daily referrals from customers are evidence of that,” said Leroy Ingram, Director of Operations.

Starting with just one shop in Oro Valley, the multi-award-winning company now has three shops around the Tucson area and two shops in the Phoenix (East Valley) area. As an additional differentiating factor between itself and other automotive maintenance and repair providers, OOROO offers convenient online appointment scheduling and seamless payment through its OOROO Auto app. Key to its growth strategy and mission to transform the industry, OOROO has expanded its mobile service area to include Tucson, Phoenix, Oro Valley, Marana, Sahuarita, Green Valley, Vail and Rita Ranch.

Thank you to each and every customer and community member who has supported us over the last 10 years! We couldn’t have accomplished any of it without you. We’re so excited as we look forward to the next 10 years and all there is to come.

7th Annual Joyride Recipients

Every holiday season, OOROO has the honor of offering the gift of free auto repair to families in need through our annual Joyride Program. This program is made possible by the thoughtful nominations submitted by all of you in our Tucson community. In fact, we’ve just wrapped up our 7th annual Joyride nominations to surprise two very deserving recipients, Kash and Nicole, chosen by our volunteer panel of local judges.

We know what it means to us to help families in need every year through this program, but it is even more touching to hear what it meant to one of our recipients:

“OOROO went above and beyond my expectations. As a disabled veteran and stay at home dad and grandfather, my vehicle was absolutely essential to doing that job. The good folks at OOROO fixed my car of nearly every mechanical problem it had, giving me something money cannot buy in the process––peace of mind. Thank you OOROO.” – Kash T.

We were able to provide these much-needed repairs on Kash’s vehicle: timing chain and water pump replacement, cooling system flush, oil change, headlight switch replacement, front brake replacement, brake fluid flush, lower control arm replacement, rack and pinion replacement, four-wheel alignment, and clutch fluid flush. Thank you for the kind words Kash!

Here is what one nominator had to say about our other recipient this year: “Nicole is a dear friend of mine and recently she has fallen on hard times. She has required two surgeries in two months for a rare vascular problem. She is a single mother working two full time jobs and was forced to take nearly three months off of one of her jobs due to the nature of her health issue. Finances are tight for her, and she really needs to keep the only vehicle she has operational; however, due to medical bills she is forced to put off necessary repairs.”

For Nicole, we were able to provide these much-needed repairs: electronic steering motor coupler replacement, rear brake replacement, front strut replacement, four wheel alignment, spark plug replacement, fuel system de-carbon service, air filter replacement, and cabin air filter replacement. And special thanks to TreadLogic for replacing two brand new tires on Nicole’s car!

Thank you to everyone who continues to nominate and share the stories of friends in need in our community for Joyride each year!
